SUMMARY
Fluorescence techniques are used in plant physiological research with the aim of characterizing specificities of the photosynthesis process and their changes when plants are exposed to stress situations. However, the common methods are not stress-specific and do not allow differentiation between multiple stresses. In this context, new techniques have been developed such as Laser induced fluorescence (LIF) or Fluorescence–Imaging (FI) showing promising potential for stress sensing in plants. The aim of our project therefore is to further develop and validate LIF and FI techniques for use in early detection and differentiation of biotic and abiotic stress factors in barley and sugar beet. Furthermore the potential of combining the information obtained with different sensors will be exploited in order to establish a basis for sensor fusion which could contribute to more effective and efficient breeding programs and crop management.
SENSORS
| Imaging PAM and PAM 2000 | Detection of stress by means of the chlorophyll fluorescence parameters Fo (ground fluorescence), Fm (maximum fluorescence), Kautsky effect, etc. ( detailed information can be found under: http://www.walz.com/) |
| Lambda 301 | Fiber optic fluorescence spectrometer to measures the fluorescence spectra between 350 and 820 nm. This technique also allows recordings of the fluorescence life-time (detailed information can be found under: http://www.iom-berlin.de/). |
|
Multiplex®3 |
Multi parameter optical remote sensor to measure the auto fluorescence of leaves. It provides information about the anthocyanin, flavonol and chlorophyll content (detailed information can be found under: http://www.force-a.eu/). |
| Nuance | A multispectral fluorescence-imaging system which provides pixel wise information about fluorescence intensities between 420 and 720 nm (detailed information can be found under: http://www.cri-inc.com/). |
| MiniVeg N | Fluorescence sensor which detects the fluorescence emission at 609 and 740 nm. The ratio of these wavelengths provides information about the chlorophyll and nitrogen content (detailed information can be found under: http://umwelt.fritzmeier.de) |
